Gas Smell

We just got back from our maiden voyage with our 11 year old Scamp 5th wheel. About five days into our extended stay at a campground where we had been using the hot water heater the whole time, we noticed a gas smell when we entered the trailer. We finally turned off the hot water heater to get rid of the odor and leak of gas and the smell went away. How in the world do we figure out where it is leaking from? Anyone else had this problem?

Nancy

Hi Nancy
I had this problem.#1--make sure no leaks can get into rv from exterior of hot water tank. When i took hotwater cover down there was a small acess hole for propane line and the rubber seal was shot.We just put caulking in hole around propane line.

#2--I had my lines inspected this spring and found a second source for propane smell. We had a broken flange where two lines joined and it was covered with black tape. Now repaired properly.

Hope this helps

Propane leak

It is good to check all the lines every so often. However, if you smell gas only when the heater is on and not when it's off, it narrows your search down quite a bit. Yes, it's good to check them all, but at least you know you need to start somewhere in the heater area.

As Ches suggested, it's probably a seal or connection somewhere.
