Grease Seal

Alright bearing wizards..

I was repacking the bearings on the 13 Scamp before it's winter sleep and while gently tapping the grease seal in I seemed to get a little tap happy and pushed the seal further in then flush. Not wanting to have to try to get the new seal out at risk of damaging it, I decided to leave it in that way. The rims are off getting new tires and now I'm questioning wether or not it will have any adverse effect being pushed further in then flush. Can anyone tell me why it would be worth while to take it all back apart and push that seal to a flush postion with the back of the hub or am I worrying about nothing? Thanks!

Aaron,

If its a minor amount no problem...if its more than lets say 1/8 inch the seal may wear faster on the lip, its home turf is a worn smooth area it likes on the spindle.

I did the same thing this spring, getting the seal just below flush on one drum, maybe 1/32". I know better and usually use something to tap the seal in that will stop me when the seal goes flush with the surface. 6751 miles later, still no grease showing up inside the rim; time to repack.

Thanks for the info.. While I'm slightly reassured, I think my anal side is going to win me over here or I'll be thinking about it all the time. I guess I'll see if I can push it back out without it damaging it because at least sitting here at the computer I have a feeling it may be more the 1/8th. Guess I'll see when I take it apart.. and since it will be off to check, might as well do it right I guess!

I just have to ask, why are you putting new tires on a trailer you're going to store for the winter? Gosh, if the rubber is that bad, I'd put it on jackstands until just before camping season and get fresh rubber then... but, maybe there's something going on here you haven't said? Like a plan to winter camp?

Yep. Occasionally it comes out in the winter. Sometimes just day trips as a shelter from the wind on frozen lakes when we snowkite. But it sees alot less action in the winter. New rubber just cuz it needed it and I actually have money right now! Come nice weather, well, then I'll need new toys and gas money! It has a nice home inside, so no worries. Fall is the down time to get the stuff done I should have done all summer!
