My 2003 Casita is showing some tiny stress cracks like pencil lines. How do you repair this. Can i use Kitty Hair. That is what a marine boat dealership told me. I have never done this before.
Kitty hair is just resin and short fibreglass fibers. This would require paint afterwards. Not the correct product for cracks in the gel coat. I have seen a low viscosity crack filler, but it was not cheap: Home - MagicEzy
Other repairs involve grinding out the crack with a Dremel like tool and then refilling with more gel coat, that is matched to the color of the original.
Minor cracks in the gelcoat are not a cause of concern and are pretty much normal. Try car paste wax and let it dry "too" long, then buff it.
Please post pictures, which would help with getting good help.
First, if they are only limited to the gel coat, it is not only common in fiberglass, but it doesn't pose a "structural problem" as far as the strength of the fiberglass is concerned. Now, if the cracks run full depth through the shell, that is a different story. I worked on boats for many years and one product that we used a lot on small cracks was a product called Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure. Make sure that whatever you apply it to is absolutely dry first.
And you will have to strip the wax and scrub it out for the stuff to stick in the cracks. I strip the wax and then scrub out the cracks with a fine brush and some acetone. then mask off the area well as the Captains troll is very thin to wick into the cracks.
