Talking This works for us

I'm guessing everybody already had bicycles they like and are looking for solutions to an existing problem. My regular bicycles had been stolen years ago, so we started over from scratch. We bought 2 Adventurer Six-Speed Folding Bikes and 2 Folding Bike Carry Bags. They travel inside the Odyssey as my LX model does not have a roof rack.

Here is a link to the type, if not the brand of racks used....

I used an old boxfan frame for the sides and angle iron from old bed frames for the crossmembers. the feet are made of angle as well.
The idea is to get the bikes as close to the trailer as possible to allow full articulation clearance when turning.
This is accomplished in two ways...
1] Get the rack up high enough to allow the inside bike handle bar to just clear the top of the trailer or at least to take advantage of the natural contour (in the case of a Scamp)
2] Attach the rack rails facing in opposite directions so as to allow them (and the bikes) to be as close together as possible.
My frame work has since been modified to allow for storage of my "legoblock" levelers below the bikes and above the propane tank.
You could consider any sturdy structure which would firmly secure the racks in the right position.

details on bike rack

Floyd, I need to do something like this. I have an old Thule roof rack for the rails. I am wondering whether this is welded or bolted or both and whether removing the battery is an issue at all. What stock did you use for uprights? thanks
Mark

Now that I sent the first reply I see some of the info I was asking about in a previous response. Still curious about battery access
and whether bolting or welding was used
thanks
Mark

I originally designed it to bolt to the frame, but I just don't like to drill the frame tubing any more than necessary, so I weled the finished rack in place. The way mine is configured, the propane tank must be removed in order to remove the battery. Normal service can be done in place. My battery has been upsized to a 29.
All done with a Hobart 110V MIG.

I was thinking about building something like Floyd has. I was looking at using .75 square tubing for the vertical supports. I found some 3" square U bolts that I was planning to attach the uprights to the frame so no drilling or welding to the frame. Found it all at ACE hardware. I'm still in the planning stages on mine.
