Help, locked out in campground

My six year old has locked us out of our '82 Scamp. Everything, including car keys are in there. Locksmith is two hour wait and $80. Tips?

You should be able to remove the door handle with two Phillips screws on the outside and turn the square shaft inside with the blade of a flat screwdriver (or maybe even with the door handle itself by rotating the whole handle and base after you remove the screws).

It won't work if the locking pin is in place on the inside.

The pen couldn't get put in and lock us out can it? Thought you could only do that from inside?

I'm not above locking myself out of cars or campers so they all have a hide-a-key somewhere. I also carry a lock out tool for others to use. Of no use to you now, but something to consider. Is there a slider window to shove the kid through to unlock the door. Or screws to remove a window.

You could insert the pin and then slam the door closed, yes. It's loose enough that there's a good chance it would fall out, but I recall another forum member got locked out with the pin in place. I believe they had to remove the whole door. I'd try windows before I did that.

So I take it the pin is in place and the windows are locked…

Okay, how about this… remove the handle, insert a bent wire through the square shaft opening, and try to dislodge the pin.

Got the screws out. when a twist the handle to open, all it does is wiggle the handle with the base. Is there something else I need to do?

Rectangular base spins freely. Handle still locked.

Ok, got someone to help me take the door off and need to get it back on now. We're there two of those ball thingies on top of each hinge? It's dark, and can only find one!

I forgot about Scamps inside lock pin. Hide-a-key would be of no value in this case. I did help get into a locked camper by removing the handle screws as Jon says.

So you can put the square shaft into the square opening and turn the whole handle, base, and shaft freely, but nothing happens?

I'm concerned because if the square opening turns, the latch should release. If the square opening won't turn, that's because the pin is blocking it. I'm wondering if something has gone amiss with the inside part of the latch mechanism. And if that's the case, the next time you close the door for any reason, you'll be in the same situation.

Let us know what you figure out… I am very curious!

Here's what the hinge should look like:

Talking Note to self

Self, NEVER leave the trailer and car keys in the trailer.

Hmm. We require the keys in order to lock Homelet. It specifically says to NOT lock the inside and then slam the door. It will break something.

We did both lock our trunk keys in the trunk of our Fiat Spyder. I had to drill through two bulkheads to get into the trunk and fish out one of the knapsacks that held one of the keys. I then pop riveted covers over the holes I made.

I took a piece of sch 40 PVC ,glued a pipe cap on one end and a cleanout fitting with a screw plug on the other end. I painted the pipe black to match the trailer frame . Inside the pipe I placed a key lock box containing TV door keys and trailer keys . I mounted the pipe under the trailer out of sight. Only had to use it once. so far.

I removed the pin that locks from the inside. Therefore I can NOT lock the trailer from the inside.

With Scamp, there is zero reason to hide a spare key. If the pin is in place, no key will help, and if the pin is not in place, all you need is a screwdriver to remove the outside handle.

I'm pretty sure the OP did the only thing possible when the pin is in place, which is to remove the door.

Wonder how it turned out now that its a day later. I suspect after a two hour wait a six year old will be willing to unlock the door or hand the keys out the window. You could turn off the propane if the child has culinary ambitions. Patience. Just sit around a campfire behaving like you are having fun. The child may be motivated by the control your panic gives him/her.
