Help with VIN

Tried (for the second time) to register my 16' Scamp today with no luck. Because it is from out of state the VIN needs to be verified. We had a state trooper come out and he verified that the VIN on the bill of sale and other paperwork matched the VIN on the camper. The DMV rejected it because the 10th digit is an I. I understand that I's are not used in VINs but there is an I on the camper and an I on the paperwork. Using the Scamp VIN decoder it seems that it is the date digit but the decoder does not go back to '88. Here is a picture. Might not be an I, but certainly different than the 1's.

Anybody have experience with this?

-Bill

I know if it were a motor vehicle. Car/truck. The 10th digit of the vin is the year. And if it were a 1988 the letter of the 10th digit would be a "J"..Not sure if it would apply to campers. But if the trooper would"call it" A "J" I bet it would pass. Randy

Call Scamp and ask Kent about it and if he says they used an "I" ask if he would state so on a Scamp letterhead and mail it to you.

What state are you in? You've got a clear title and they won't issue a new title? Well if your efforts fail... you can still sell it to someone in a free state. Let us know how it goes.
Suggestion... go back to the trooper who signed off on it and ask for help, the one thing you can count on is that there is always room for favoritism in government. He can probably get it done!

A=80 B=81 C=82 D=83 E=84 F=85 G=86 H=87 J=88 K=89 THERE ARE NO I's, O'S, OR Q's because they get confused with ones and zeros.

In 1988 Scamp DID use EYEs, see my post above.

O.K. I was just finishing the series. As I stated. This is what is used in motor vehicle VINS. And may be different for campers/trailers. FYI 2010 is also and A... lol Randy

And this is reality

I've deleted all the info that is important to me, but you'll notice the 10th digit in the VIN.

Thanks Donna (and everyone else), that answers part of the puzzle. The DMV wants to see it for themselves. If it is an "I" (in their opinion) they say they will issue a new VIN. Ugh.

They also claim that the plates from our last camper have been reported lost and so are not transferrable -- even though we have both and did not report them lost! Not looking for advice on this one, just venting. Because they would not accept the VIN we had to pay extra for a temp plate, the new plates will cost more and who knows what they'll do to us in the VIN.

Thanks again, Bill

Finally got the camper registered! We had to bring it to the DMV for VIN verification but the people we dealt with this time had no problem with the "I". Thanks to all of you.

We had an ugly experience with the VIN on an 1987 we sold to a couple in CA. The State Cop was exceptionally nasty about it and accused us of selling a stolen unit and that we had changed the number and we’re trying to pull a fast one. Simply would not listen to the situation of the Extra digit . Had to get notarized papers from Scamp office. He went so far as to threaten us with confiscation and crushing the trailer. No apology was forthcoming when we proved it was legal. If anyone runs into this problem I have all of my documentation to help you. Just contact us. I am still really ticked off about the treatment we got from him. ☹️
