Homemade Showers

Are the floor joists in egg trailers spaced where something like this installation would work?

Now that is being space creative. :omy the only problems I see is the third from last looks like the draining water would run up hill part way, and putting the shower away wet because of time issues. Quite a surprise though to see that. :reye2 I had a very quickly passing thought on something like this, but it was more hoolahoop, shower curtain, and plastic tub. hadn't gotten to the water part, but you could use the kitchen sink in the manner they did here I guess.

To cut a hole in the floor of the trailer would be something I would have great trouble with. Scardy cat me. as long as there is no beam under the spot you wanted, I don't know why you couldn't. :chin making it hold a persons weight would be the challenge. I've seen popups that have open ups, but never one like this. It could be more trouble then it's worth, unless one is really dirty/stinky

:lol

Shower

It's a really ingenoius idea for sure.
But it looks pretty close to that axle, one really big bump and that shower pan would be pushed up to the roof.
The Burro's axle is further forward from the sink.
I would put it before the axle with some new cross members welded to the frame.

It does look like it would be a pain to set up tho. Expecially if you were not alone in the trailer, sometime its hard enough just to get a cup of coffee with two people.
I would have to be very desperate for a shower to use it.
But the base idea is great, maybe all the brilliant people here could come up with a version that works for everyone.

OWWH that is close. thought it had a protection plate, but thats on both sides. PLUS it has spings. they bounce more, don't they?

Shower installation

What I like about it:
GREAT use of space!!! The main drawback I always felt about having a trailer with a shower was having that space perminantly devoted to empty space that's only occupied infrequently. You just have to kick everybody out of the trailer to use it. Not bad really.
I also REALLY like that it self-stores. Storage is a major issue in our little eggs - and I'm a nutcase when it comes to storage space anyway.

What I'm worried about:
Structural integrity of the thing. As mentioned above - I really wonder what you'd have to to to make it take the weight of a person. The natural thing to use is a commercial shower pan - but those are made to be supported, so you'd need some support from below.
Where to place it: The natural place of course is the center open space (in a 13 footer anyway) between the kitchen and the closet. However - in my Boler at least, that part sits fairly low already - lowering it another 6 inches or so I think would be real difficult.

An alternative of course - it to just sit the shower pan in the middle of the room. (better structurally and you don't have to hack on the floor) It would be a snap to arrange some sort of warm water supply and to arrange a drain (put the pan on a short platform and drain it out the door into a portable tank). The problem you're left with however is storage of a 2x2/3x3 shower pan.

I saw a similar arrangement once on a pop-up camper site. They'd used a plastic pan made to fit under a washing machine. They installed a drain plug in the side to drain it out the door. Don't remember what they did for the curtain and the water supply. I'll have to try to find the site and post the URL here if I can.

Storage is still an issue though. There MIGHT be room under one of the seats - but you'd have to cut a special access door to use the space to its fullest. Suppose one could always just shove it in the tow vehicle... Like everything else. :) I would also imagine that some sort of special storage carrier could be arranged under the trailer in one of the sections that isn't as low to the ground as the middle (in my Boler the center section is dropped about 6" relative to the dinette and front bunk sections).

Just a few notions...

PS. That didn't take long - here's the article I was remembering:

Shower

Unless I missed it, something that can cause major problems is mildew. If you have that in the middle of the trailer, how are you going to be able to keep it open long enough for it to become completely dry. Any dampness at all - floor, curtain, or any other place beneath the cover will mildew faster than you can say Clorox.

That would be my major concern.

On second look, it appears to me that the drain hose is ascending rather than decending. Must be an optical illusion...otherwise how would it drain?

It's clever, but I would be far more inclined to set it up outside, either with the curtain or without, just taking a shower in your bathing suit. I'm not enthused about cutting a hole in the floor to create a humid atmosphere inside trailer just because conventional homes have inside showers, so we consider it "normal".

Beach cottages often have outside showers, with or without curtains, so if your thinking is precedent-based, there is a precedent.

Uphill drain

I noticed that too Suz. The uphill drain.
When I showed my wife the pictures she said we don't need that.
So there!!!! One less thing to do.
Oh Heck,
Maybe I'll just wax it and just go camping......
I can always do the mods another day ( like when I'm retired)

Hmmm Good ideas

I like the sunken shower, but agree that it has soem issues with moisture and such. I like the idea of using a washer drip pan. They are light, have a built-in drain and I think I could figure out how to store it under the bed. I had not thought of a portable drainage system either. Now I just need to figure out how to attach a curtain from the ceiling (hula hoop?).

Having a built in shower is less of an issue for a guy or for a couple traveling together. But there is no way I want to be showering outside when the whole campground has figured out I am there alone.

Ingenious!

Very ingenious indeed. But I tried to imagine actually using it. "Do I really need a shower today?" [envisions set-up and take-down...] "Nah! I'll just stay downwind!" Really, it does look like a complete pain. Clever, though. And you'd have to hang the curtain outside to dry, wouldn't you?

But... if you're near a camp shower, use it. (I do, even with an inboard shower.) If you're out in the boonies, get a SunShower. They're great and they work--in sunny weather, of course!

Mike-- the shower (as in a Casita) "waste space"? Not hardly. I use mine to store various light weight items in appropriate, easily moved plastic containers. At least one 1-gallon drinking/cooking water jug. Dog food and bowls. The ever-useful plastic bucket, with tube and funnel for filling water tank when camping where you have to walk to a camp pump or spigot. Etc. I see your point, but it's not wasted space for me. None of this stuff, BTW, has to be removed for access to the throne. Only for showers.

For ingenuity and space utilization I would give this mod an 8. For practicality and usability, a 2.

Shower in floor

Dumb!

Reminds me of some of the early inventions of flight.... or the definition of an elephant...'A mouse, built to government specifications'.

I'd rather heat up some water on the stove, spread out some plastic, and take a sponge bath.

But thank goodness we can think differently and appreciate different things. :)
