How cold should the AC be?

I have a 1999 Casita with roof top AC.
How cold should the air be if I put a thermometer right on the exhaust vent?

I was taught that with automotive A/C that you can expect about 20 degrees below the outside air temperature. I have a couple thermometers for A/C use that have a probe to stick into the air outlet, and they show the cool range to be between 48 and 60 degrees.

One can test the unit's performance with ordinary room-air thermometers, too.

Here are some instructions for doing so from a very illuminating page on the subject of RV A/C ( link to source)

Quote:
The RVer can perform a temperature performance test with two thermometers. One is used for ambient room temperature going into the A/C filter and the other thermometer is to measure the cool air exiting the discharge vent closest to the A/C unit. The A/C should be set to maximum cold and should run for at least 30 minutes.
The factory specification is approximately 20°F cooler air exiting out the discharge than the ambient room temperature entering into the filter. Air conditioners only remove the heat from the air, so if your RV temperature inside is 90 degrees the discharge temperature would only be approximately 70 degrees.

That should all depend on your unit (a/c unit). Under size or over size. Yes general rule of thumb is 20 under the outside temp. I know for a fact I can get 30 under outside temp easy. But I have a fairly new unit. 5000, 8000, 9000 btu units will work but what is it working in?
I am very very happy with what I have but I like it cold.

It's twenty under intake temp, Shawn. Not necessarily outside temp.

Since many such units draw from inside the rig, further cooling can/will occur as the room air being fed into the unit itself cools.

Understand , but if you have a undersize unit or a unit that is not installed right like on the floor you will only get so much.
A unit on the floor will only pick up the cooler air and not the hotter air from the ceiling. So it wont work as good as if it is installed higher.

To improve the efficiency of our floor level AC unit we place a fan in front of the AC unit and blow the output of the AC unit towards the rear, adding a mixing function.
