How I made a boler screen door

Hello everyone

I have seen many screen doors made on this forum and others, so I thought I would share the basics of how I made mine.
Keep in mind I am not a carpenter but I did take a shop class in high school 25 years ago. Attached are some pics of how I went about it. For those who are avid wood workers I have a lot of respect for your craft. I did all I knew and although it could have been better, I think I did pretty good. I hope it helps those at least try as they really do look nice. I think anyways.
Cheers

Awesome, Noel. If you aren't a carpenter, you are on your way.

You may not be a carpenter but you did a really nice job, something to be proud of. Even better is your write up and pictures of your progress.
You didn't learn that 25 years ago in high school.

I can attest that it looks as good in person. Noel would pass my finish carpenters exam. Better work than I've seen on million dollar homes.

Beautiful work, Roy. I assume the screen door swings in, so wondering if you find it takes up a lot of room inside. Did you put some kind of quickly removable hinge pins, for cooler days of camping, or will you leave it on 365 days a year.

Thank you for the kind words. As far as the mounting goes, it is mounted permanently, which is our preference. I dislike bugs so we generally keep the door shut at all times to keep them outside. This is a custom 2 person wood trailer on the inside so as I opens onward, it sits up against the Dometic coolcat at the bottom and a custom dresser, then cupboard on the top. I could have went bi-fold to save inside room but didn't like the look of having a seam up the middle of the door. I would have had to choose a different design. It crossed my mind in the beginning though.

Please post some other pictures of your custom 2 person wood trailer, with such a good job on the door, I can imagine what other things you may have done.

I can not take the credit for the majority of the work done in my trailer, although I did do some. I bought the trailer with the interior done by a very talented member on this forum. Here are some pics of the interior. Changes where made over the past 3 years since I've owned it. I still have to take new pics. I will post an update when done.

I am an avid woodworker, and would be pleased to make that door myself. Good job, Noel.

It must be noted that I choose to use pine to match the rest of my boler interior. As a result the door size fluctuates with the humidity as most woods do. However, this one moves a lot! So much in fact that it binds. I have had to make adjustments to the sides, <Ehem...hand planer..> along the way to free up the door. Perhaps a different type of wood would have been more forgiving but when it;s pouring down rain, I don't think it would matter that much. I have seen some people even use plywood for the side panels as it is more stable. Material is definitely something to seriously consider when planning this. FYI: It took me about a month in my spare time to build this.

Noel, if you plane it to have a clearance of at least 1/8" all around, and have it close against a stop, you should not have any issues, either with binding, or sealing against the stop.

The species of wood used would only have a wee bit of difference in expansion and contraction. Yes, plywood is more stable, but for the most part, not as nice looking. Some of the heavier entrance doors we build use a heavy plywood core, with a 1/4" lamination of solid wood on each side to give them stability.

Hi Jim
Thank you for that. Yes, the stop is my trim and I believe my clearance is less than 1/8". I will definitely look into that. Cheers.

How did you attach it inside the boler? I was thinking about doing this but the only thing I can think if is to drill into the vertical metal supports on either side of the door to mount the sides.
