One way is to make a sturdy storage box to keep camping stuff in, then use it for a step when camping. Here's another option, used alone or in combination with the box... I made this step from a base of an old hand cart, it worked well. You could use a piece of 3/16 plate or frame a piece of expanded metal with small angle iron....

I had this installed on my trailer, and what a difference! No wondering if the step is going to roll when you step down. Depending upon your trailer frame arrangement, the custom mount can be a little pricey, but reducing the chance of a tumble is priceless.

Make your own. I went to Harbor Freight and bought a platform step with a top surface of 18w X 12d and the legs fold down to an overall height of about 3". I cut the legs and reattached the feet with some rivets I ended up with an 8" step height. You could cut them to end up with a 10" height if desired. We also added a carpet RV step cover that I found at Wal mart

how tall was the Harbor freight one to start with?

I think what I bought will work. Attached is nice but I think it would be hard for the corgi to use and he'd be jumping instead. I also think attached steps sit too close to the trailer for comfort. After the next trip I'll re-evaluate!

The Harbor Freight stool is 12" to 13" tall.

Joy A made her own, the box step holds items and she just puts it inside the door while under tow. Open the door, pull out box step... enter. Easy peasy: outside mat

Keep in mind the recommended step heights used in buildings. Typically a minimum of 4" maximum of 7-3/4".
