I need help with entryway floor

Ok folks, we have some trouble with the floor of our scamp.

Right when you walk into the scamp the floor was soft and sagging, so my husband removed a section of wood with plans to replace the wood a litte bit later.

When he removed the wood, the only support under the wood(one piece of metal)was completley rusted through. He is trying to figure out how to support the new wood-it seems there is nothing really to attach the wood to for support.

DOes anyone have any suggestions?
Has anyone else had this problem
He wanted to take out the closet to see if he could see a way to attach a new metal strip, but I told him NOT to do that until I get some feedback from all of you.
THank you.

I'll try and post pictures when I get home, right now we are out working on our scamp.-so nice to be working outside in Chicago!

Yes, you will want to replace the metal. Maybe even weld in some extra support. The frame is cut to allow for the lower floor and door in the kitchen area. So the floor becomes more of a structural thing. I would replace the entire floor in the kitchen area. That involves removing the closet.

Each side of the entrance way should have about a 1" metal lip to hold the section of floor. A piece of angle should be welded to the bottom of the two lips. If the lips are rusted off you may be able to bolt on new lips with angle iron. I would weld two lower braces in before bolting in the new lips. If this area is not properly braced you will develop door issues.

There is a thread called 16' 1981 Scamp Frame off restoration/rebuild that may help your husband in so far as seeing what the frame looks like with the body off of it.

update with pictures

Thanks for your help. Here is the picture of our scamp. You can see the floor right inside the door has been removed, and the piece of metal that has rusted through. So.... it looks like we might have to remove the closet after all.
We are just trying to make sure we really do this the right way-yes, Eddie, the last thing we want to have are door issues.
We know someone that could help us with welding. We also have to do some work on the frame in the very back of the trailer a few spots are rusted through there as well.
Thanks everyone.
