At a Scamp Camp one of the group shared the bucket wash machine. Get a bucket from the bakery. (about three gallons) Make sure it has a tight fitting lid. Fill about half full with water add a little soap and add your clothes but the lid on tight but on floor in bathroom or the back of the truck and drive. They use this washing machine on a trip to Mexico many year ago and said it worked. I have the bucket and will try it this summer.:conf I will see if it works.

I think the little machine is just like the bucket, except you are the TT or pickup for the sloshing. the machine would be good for people like me who want it done now, and not down the road, or if your sitting for days at a time. IMHO. but the bucket could be used for other things when not washing. like to keep your found rocks in. :)
If you need a good lid on your bucket, you can get them at sportsmansguide.com. they cost more then some buckets, but there will be no water escaping. I use them for water toting to the pow wow. No rocks get in these.

:wave Just in case you all haven't seen this little washing machine, it is small, sturdy and seems (if you plan ahead), to do your laundry rather easily. What I mean by 'plan ahead' is the 5lb load limit. That is only 3 shirts, but for the smaller white items in life, it could be a weeks worth. Oh well, just a thought. Probably wouldn't even use one of those tablets you are discussing.

:zz I guess it would help if I read all the posts before entering my own. Sorry about that... Same machine, different source to find it.

Grandma had an old tub wringer washer - not the mini Richard was talking about. You can still buy them but they cost more than the modern type. Something about supply and demand.

Trouble is, by the time we get around to doing the laundry, we got way, way too much stuff.

And, Pam like to point out that I have nothing left that's even remotely white!:lol

Easier to take a whole trailer-load of laundry to the laundramat!

Besides, I like to feel that by sitting out in the comfort of the trailer while Pam does the laundry ... well, I feel like I'm helping!

For those who don't take multi-week trips, who don't have an extended period between laundry days or who don't have the laundry of multiple persons to contend with, the bucket arrangement, although a bit messy at times, works fine.

I think Jana hit on something with the bucket/mop wringer combo. If you are washing 2 sheets, underwear, a few t-shirts, a pillow case and a couple of pair of pants it will take multiple bucket loads but its doable. I know because I did my wash with a toilet plunger and a huge paint bucket when my washing machine broke down. (I also found out it was more fun to put everything in the bathtub, turn on an old Janet Jackson recording and dance everything clean.) The wringing of larger items and bucket refills are the most cumbersome aspect of the project. Mop bucket wringers can be plastic, detachable and pretty light weight. One could be stuck in the tow vehicle or stuck out of the way. A good bucket with a lid can also be a campers friend for other uses.

Washing powder tabs are wonderful for traveling. I used to buy the trial packages of powder for business trips that were longer than a week. At that point, I'd find a laundromat. The single-use trial packs were small and much cheaper than the single packs for sale in the vending machines at laundromats. The tab packs are even more compact.

I think that on a trip long enough to require the doing of laundry, I'd like the bucket back up. Not all laundromats one stumbles to along the way are great places for a female to wander into solo.

When Sue and I are on the road and laundry time is really necessary we find a place with a pub across the road. We both still work (young pups) so we never get to go for more than 2 weeks at a time anyway. :)

Pictures? No way. Bathtub laundry projects are private matters. Anyway, if there were pictures, they would be more appropriately posted on the Chubby Chasers' Naked Fat Chicks website. I left no evidence, not even a tub ring.

An idea for a bucket type washing machine might be one of the Gott Water Coolers with a spout at the bottom. We have a large one that some construction people left at our house years ago. We never could get them to come back and claim it so it became ours. It might work well in the bathroom, in the back of a pickup or on the trailer tongue.

Pippa, i have one of the Zodi Hot Shower things that hooks up to a small propane bottle and gives instant hot water for a shower, washing some clothes or even washing dishes outdoors when "roughing it". I use it in my horse trailer when i go base camp type camping with stock (my Skamper truck camper does not have a bathroom so once the animals are unloaded the trailer serves that purpose). When packing into the wilderness the Zodi shower can be easily taken along. I like it much better than the solar showers because i can have hot water on demand without having to remember to leave the solar bag in the sun or if it is cloudy and solar won't work. Zodi also has a tent type enclosure that can be placed outside of a rig that is not self contained. For more secluded camping it is a great place for the port-a-potty as well as the shower.
