LED Running Lights

Is there a Plus side to installing new LED lights and assemblies for the Running / op lights?

Complete units, not retrofit bulbs?

As stated in prior threads, one of the benefits of LED's inside and outside your Egg, is that your tow vehicle charging system will work more efficient and not have to work as hard to charge the batteries in both tv and egg. With less current draw due to LED exterior lights, more current goes to the battery charging.

Hi Art, while our marker lights are incandescent, our stop/turn signal lights at the rear of the trailer are LEDs and I think they are much better than incandescent lights. They appear brighter because the multiple lamps fill the lens and they really attract attention which is of course what you want. How well they will last remains to be seen. Raz

In addition, LED stop and turn signals will light quicker. They are a split second sooner to come on and sometimes a split second is the difference between someone hitting or avoiding you.

IMHO, the biggest reason to change to a complete unit is most of these trailers have old lenses that are foggy and scratched. You want to be SEEN. Otherwise, what's the point? A white box going down the road is noticable, but at dawn-dusk or night time the brighter the better (within DOT limits) and yeah, there's the draw from the tug. YMMV

Brand new owner of a 17 Big Foot, 1989. Where would I find a complete LED tail light replacement ? Thanks in advance for your help. I am going to need it.

Here is a beginning, you will need to know approximate size when looking for replacement

Thank you Jim, I looked over all of your modifications and told my wife We have a long way to go. Nice job !!!!!!!! Our older 1989 Big Foot unit is very original and in pretty good shape except for cosmetic fixes. It's going to be fun. Do you know anyone in the fiberglass group who has a Big Foot around my year that might be able to recommend solutions for my list of fixes?

Hi, Art Vandelay

I think the biggest plus to installing a whole unit is that it's sealed against the elements, unlike a simple bulb retrofit.
I recommend sealed exterior units, and replacement bulbs for the interior.
