LED TV's have an LCD screen. The LEDs are simply used as a back light. LEDs have longer life than the traditional LCD backlight and use less power.

I will say I've seen an LCD TV fail in less than a year in home use, no road travel at all. There are units that simple are early failures.

We've had and LCD TV for about 8 years and it's traveled nearly 100,000 miles including 1000 miles of dirt roads without issue. We typically take our TV off it's mount and ly it face down on the couch or bed with a bed pillow on top of it while driving.

As Norm says both types of sets use an LCD panel but the difference is in the backlight only.

The older original models use a CFL tube for backlight while the newer LED models backlight with LED's instead.

It remains to be seen really which will provide better life?
I have seen a lot more panels with LED have a few die than CFL where the tube itself would have to die.

Since CFL tubes are also a higher color temperature than normal movie studio lighting and trend to the blue end of the color spectrum the LED which also trend to bluish were an ideal replacement when they were first used for this.

We will see?
