Question Lights go off when pump is turned on (12V)

1990 Casita. When running off the battery the lights go off (pump doesn't run) when I turn on the pump. If I turn off the water pump the lights will go back on after a short delay. New fully charged battery. This doesn't happen when plugged in to 120 V power. Both will work on 120V. Any ideas why this is happening?

Sounds like there is a short that is popping a self resetting circuit breaker. The slight delay afterwards before the lights come back is the circuit breaker cooling and resetting. I suspect that you also hear a small click.

Is the battery properly connected? Typically the black wire at the battery is NOT negative. I would also check connections at the battery any splices between the battery and converter in both the positive and negative cables.

Good Luck!

I agree with Bob. I would suspect a short beyond the water pump switch. It could be as simple as worn insulation at a wire staple or a bad pump. Raz

The delay of the lights coming on makes sense it's a delay of a fuse resetting. Where would this fuse be and what does it look like?

Can you test a pump?

It's not fuse, it's a circuit breaker and they are usually small metal cubes with two wire posts on them. Listen near the battery area and you should hear a click when it trips and/or resets.

It was the converter. I removed it and separated the 120 v and 12 v systems. Worked just fine.

I just LOVE the wiring conventions in the Scamp. AT the battery it's the usual Red=POS and Black=NEG. Once you get IN the Scamp, it's Black=POS. I guess the logic is that it's the "hot", not ground, wire... as with AC. Oh well... it builds character, I suppose.
