Name Misspelled on Title

An RV store in Oregon sold us our Silver Cloud in late January. They had to apply for an Oregon title as the seller. They finally received it last week, signed it over to us as the buyers, and we received it today. On the title, they misspelled our last name as Manderson rather than Anderson. Will this cause a problem when I go to apply for an Illinois title? Of course, I'll take several forms of ID and the original paperwork from the purchase. Can the new Illinois title just have the corrected spelling or do I have to go back through Oregon?

The seller has an obligation to provide you with a correct title assuming the misspelling is not your fault. There usually is a fee involved with getting a corrected title.


I would start at the Illinois DMV and see what they say. It might not be a problem. Some license people are pretty easy going and some like to make things as difficult as possible. I had a Washington title with my middle initial incorrect and they wanted $25 to issue a corrected title. I never bothered to change it and when I sold the vehicle, it went unnoticed. Best of luck from someone who was born in Illinois, lived there 35 years, and grateful I don't live there anymore.

I had an RV that I purchased from a dealer and the vin was incorrect I just went down with the RV to the DMV (Oregon) and they reissued a new corrected title at no charge and no hassle, it just takes time to get the new one.
