New OLD Scamp/Acorn Questions...

I just purchased a 1980 Scamp/Acorn and need to figure out how some systems work and correct PO "fixes". The 120v/12v inside works. The fiberglass and windows are in pretty good shape except the door has no weatherstrip and the hinge side has a bowed area where it doesn't fit well (about a 3/4" gap) and I have no idea what weatherstripping the scamp had originally. The water pump didn't turn on with the sink switch so I am not sure if it is not working or I have to turn a switch somewhere else. It has a Fan-Tastic vent that works but it is causing the roof to sag an inch or so, is it installed improperly? The walls are painted spongy stuff, maybe the cloth has been removed, not sure if I can or want to replace it. I found the aftermarket Dometic refrigerator manual PDF online and will try to get it running. Is there anyplace or anyone that has digital manuals or pictures for a 1980 Scamp/Acorn? Does anyone have one this year that knows what is original or how things work? I have been looking at pics for a year online but mine is the ONLY one I have ever seen in person...
Looking forward to Scamping!

Thanks in advance!

Hi, techdesigner
I just purchased "Nutsoid" my new "vintage" 1980 Scamp/Acorn and it really needs help too. I'm not going to try and do some of the neat things I've seen -just get stuff working so she's usable. Can you tell me what color is that funny spongy material on your walls? Is it what everyone calls elephant skin? Some of the other better-shaped ones have some kind of tape running in the seams. I'm wondering if this stuff can be painted -mine is a nice (ugh) gray. I'd sure like it to be off white. I also just ordered a fantastic vent for the one missing in Nutsoid. I was told do sit/stand on the roof so maybe that's what happened to yours? It was hard finding a vent that would even fit the low profile roof.
Another question, what is around your metal windows? Does the elephant skin just end with no taping or weatherstripping at the windows?
If I find out any information that will help you with your '80 Acorn I'll pass it along. I've had mine for less than a week and have a LOT to learn.
Good luck!

I have heard that before Scamps had a fabric liner ("rat fur"), they had Ensolite or similar vinyl-faced foam... like the Boler from which they were copied. Both the common Ensolite ("elephant skin") and the different vinyl-faced foam ("popcorn" textured lining) can be painted.

Information is good. Lack of information is not so good, but misinformation is much worse. Check facts, and apply common sense liberally.

Greg, I am in Ohio as well and have a fairly original 1983 Scamp 13 if you want to stop by and look at it for reference. HTH!

Also there is a a FGRV campout at Dillon State Park in eastern OH this weekend if you wanted to see many other eggs for comparison.

Ok another worry about the same thing. I just read somewhere in the forums that the Ensolite in the campers was WHITE. I don't have white! I have gray. It is almost true looking "elephant skin". Is it possible I have something besides Ensolite? Do others out there have/had gray?
It's an '80 Acorn.
thanks!

Lots of folks have successfully painted the ensolite. THEN you could have any color you want What you don't want to do is remove it if it's in good shape. It can be an expensive, difficult job.

I'm asking about the Ensolite...
Mine has gaps at the joints here and there, and one corner where it was torn out for some crazy reason. Also, the inside of the door really needs to be re-covered.
So- can we buy new Ensolite? Can that be patched? And is there some nice way to dress up the joints and seams? TK

Use ALEX, dab it with a damp sponge or damp cloth to match the texture then paint.

DAP Products - Caulks and Sealants - DAP® ALEX® Painters Caulk
Found at most any hardware store. Cleans up with water (If not allowed to set up) and is paintable. Another application where NOT to use silicone. If you texture the surface and paint it you the seam will be hardly noticeable.
