New to Scamp...NEW to campers, in general!

Hi, all!

I've been researching lightweight campers for months, and all of my pursuits have led me to a SCAMP! Well, we found a 1987 16 footer (Michigan) that we are looking at this weekend. We are towing with a 2006 Toyota Sienna LE on which a hitch is being installed as I type. We chose a Class III hitch designed specifically for a Sienna and are having a brake system installed, as well (for electric brakes).

I have two questions:
1) What questions should I ask the owner?

2) What do I need to know about hooking up the Scamp in order to tow?

Thanks in advance! I know these questions may sound rudimentary, but, like I said, we are new to all of this!!

So glad I found this forum!
Lisa

  1. Fiberglass RV - Document Center - Buyers Check List
  2. You may need an adapter for the Vehicle Lights/Brakes/Charge Line umbilical cord. Earlier Scamps had a small 6-pin connector and modern installations have larger 7-blade connectors and they make adapters for that.

Thanks, gentlemen....this is information I'm looking for. A little confused regarding my owner's description of plug. Having a "seven prong" installed with hopes of adapting, if necessary. Am printing out checklist...thanks!

Hi Lisa, to FiberglassRV, we're glad you're here

Best of luck on the egg hunt. I have a 1988 16' Scamp and if you make the purchase I hope you make as many memories as I have/will

Welcome!

You should ask what size ball you need for your hitch. If the trailers coupler is original to the trailer its probable a 1-7/8" if its been replaced it may be a 2".

Find out if the lights work. If not, there are magnetic ones you can use to get it home. Also ask the age/wear of the tires, and the last time the bearings were greased.
