Is the seller in a state which requires a title?

Was the seller the last registered owner and are the tags current?
Is the seller close to you or in another state?
If you are an autoclub member do the transaction at the autoclub if possible or at your licensing facility.
If nothing is current or by a different owner watch out where you step.
Be aware and know what your getting into.

In Oklahoma I didn't have to worry about a title or tag.
But I got one anyway just for this very reason.
If I ever decide to sell, I want it to be a good transaction for the buyer.

Oh my . I can't answer specifically for Washington State, but Oregon REQUIRES titles which proves ownership (and I AM GLAD). We might be able to help you, but truly Washington State DMV is going to be the definitive answer.

Start here: WA State Licensing: Vehicle Certificate of Ownership (Title) Application

Notice the information AT THE VERY BOTTOM OF THE PAGE?

Best of luck!

Best Bet: Contact your local motor vehicle registration office and tell them what you want to buy and from what state, and ask them what you have to produce to get it titled & registered in Washington.

FWIW: I would be hard pressed to hand over money for something without a title, or at least registration, in the sellers name.

Most states don't treat a used trailer the same way as a used piano, there is almost always a paper trail.

I bought an older Scamp without a title. Never want to go through that again--Never.

I bought it in NY State. Was semi-abandoned, unloaded on a speculator who semi-fixed it up--he had bit off more than he could chew...etc. But, I wanted it bad enough to settle for a notarized bill of sale from him. When I attempted to get the trailer registered in NJ that's when I found out a bill of sale ain't worth the paper it is written on.

Took me nearly 6 months of jumping through many hoops before the NJ DMV was satisfied it wasn't stolen property.

If you can still read the serial number run it by the state to see if it is registered. If you can get some history and it has been in other states/provinces contact them also. If there is a title that will get a hit. Unless the state will title it I wouldn't touch it with the proverbial 10 foot pole.

Most states have a bonded title option in the case of a lost or nonexistant title.(get a "Bill of Sale")

Here in Illannoy the process involves...

1] A signed affidavit............................... $0
2] A written appraisal by a dealer ,about.... $75
3] A three year bond, about .....................$ 50 (per $5000 of bond value)
4] Title purchase about........................... $ 100

The bond must be for 1.5 times the appraised value.
The title issued is an unincumbered clear original title.
Any legitimate claim for ownership filed within three years would result in the claimant being ONLY entitled to the bond.
No... Im not a lawyer, but I have bought a few cars and trailers.

Your state may be a bit different, but there is "usually" a way to get the job done legally.
VERIFY FIRST..... Walk-in to the DMV and ask for help and applicable paperwork requirement.

If your seller is in your state, have them do the work.

If the present owner claims to have simply lost the title...Have them apply for a lost title,(a much simpler process) which can only be done by the current legitimate owner.
