In trying to plan my awning installation I came across a fastener called Nutsert.

Here is a link to a place that sells them and the installation tool (a $10 tool)

I'd be leery of them rusting and staining the gelcoat...

yep, ive used them in my hotrod, there a great thing iffin ya git them seated good,but if ya strip them in the hole ,its a real bitch to git them out again
