In a previous life, I was a real-estate inspector and contractor. At that time, replacing two-prong receptacles with a GFCI was a code-acceptable fix to the ungrounded-circuit problem. I have been told that that rule has changed more recently, but a GFCI will function and protect on a two-wire circuit.

HOWEVER, he says in all caps, a GFCI receptacle/breaker is NOT a replacement for common sense!!! Back in the 70s, when GFCIs became the law, I understand a public-service ad was filmed, showing a sexy model taking her bubble bath, and dropping her blow drier in the tub with her. It was to demonstrate how a GFCI can save your life. They didn't release the ad, because she didn't live. Or so I'm told by (presumably) reliable sources.
