Please HELP! Compact II owners - Fiberglass RV

I am putting back the pop-top lift mechanism and my poor quality sketch I made at dissasembly is inadequate.

Where does the aluminum channel go? Inside, outside, and which way does it face, [ or ] ?

Here are photos of the part in question; the shiny aluminum channel is shown; Where does it go?
