Ches, I just checked Canadian Tire online. They have <a href="http://www.canadiantire.ca/assortments/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444254 3243&FOLDER%3C%3EbrowsePath=2534374302192103&FOLDE R%3C%3EbrowsePath=2534374303043753&FOLDER%3C%3Efol der_id=2534374303043753&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=140 8474395348027&bmUID=1051313081303" target="_blank">
a 400 crank amp Motomaster version</a> for $79 C ... which puts in the ballpark of what we're talking. I imagine it would be in the 900 peak amp range.

Hi Charles

What my idea is on these portable power packs is strictly for my TV and Satilite Dish. Its more of a challange than a requirement.I want two of them. One for TV and one for Sat Receiver.I run my TV/Sat Receiver for 2hrs on monday before i stopped. That was from my batteries using 300watt inverter.I won't be doing more than 3 days at a time dry camping.:wave

Charles' menagerie

Charles seems to have more Jump-Its than a frog factory. Any chance they're breeding down there in the basement, Charles?

Hi Robert
Well,It seems to be the answere for Charles. The cost of those new honda gen set up here at least are $1000 for the small one and $1600 for the bigger one.For a 75 watt solar panel and controller(top of line unit) cost is about $800.
I think two good batteries and two jump-its would be lots of power for a 3 day dry camp and this includes TV if weather is bad.Cost for this would be around $400--------All in CDN Funds.:wave

Xantrex 600

www.sportsmanguide.com has Xantrex xpower 600 portable power packs for $99.97 stock#wx2-73919 ($10 less with membership). With shipping mine cost me $107.96. This is less than half of what they are priced elsewhere.
It arrived yesterday and looks really nice. A 110v battery charger is included that can also be used on your car battery. The unit is pretty heavy, but easy to move with wheels and handle. The battery is 40 amphours and the inverter is 600w continuous wit surge at 1200watts.:wave

New Power pack

Jana,
I haven't tried it yet. It just came yesterday. It charged up fully overnight though. I used to just carry a spare battery in a plastic battery box that I recharged in the car's cigatette lighter.:violin :guitar

Im new here but after reading this thread, I started wondering, arent these power packs just gel cells with controlers hooked up to them?

In other words, if a person needed say 2-3 to complete a long weekend get away, couldnt you use a couple gel cells but with one controler part? Seems that would take up a lot less space. Only down side I see is for Charles on the long trips, he kinda needs each seperate charging part to get all the batteries up to snuff before he leaves again.

Just thinking out loud, comments welcome. I dont really know squat about electricty but my brother is a master electrician and I remember him talking about gel cells. Heck, I cant even get my trailer lights going (brakes or 12 volt lights).

Rich

Adding Extra Battery to Power Pack

The power pack I got says that you can use extra 12v batteries (gel cells or whatever) to extend the available amp hours by using jumper cables to connect the extra battery to the power pack. You have to disconnect the extra battery when you recharge the unit though. In the boonies you could recharge the unit and the extra battery (and the trailer battery for that matter)using either a generator or a solar panel.
I kind of have the hairbrained idea of trying to run my evaporative cooler this summer using solar power to pay the electric bill. The total amps of the motor +pump is about 12 amps. I haven't finished working out the logistics though.:sunny That is a lot of amp hours in Arizona.

Hi Rich! Welcome to the group!

You're right. You could carry a spare gel-cell battery or two, along with a dedicated charger, and accomplish the same thing.

The thing I really like about the Jump-Its, however, is that during the winter, I can split them up, carrying one in each of our vehicles, so that we can provide jump starts to ourselves and others.

My wife and I have three vehicles between the two of us, so we need three Jump-its.

The latest one I just purchased had a built in air compressor, which will come in handy for emergency "winterizing" tasks ... we're soon headed for a series of mountain top campgrounds. I just checked the temp near one ... and it was 26 degrees this morning!

Also, being basically lazy, I fugure a Jump-It doesn't weight as much as a regular car-sized deep cycle battery. I hate making my wife lift that much weight when she can grab a fresh Jump-It and bring it over to the trailer!

Thanks for the welcome Charles. I also should note that I believe gel cells like to be charged differently than deep cycles or regular lead acid batteries so dont piggy back them to charge more than one type at a time. I mainly mentioned it to help the thought process here. I dont know if a person could even buy a gel cell for what a whole charging unit costs but I do think when a unit goes kaput, it would be worth keeping for the charging part. Gel cells can be scavenged from various places at times like emergency exit lights and signs or cash register back-up power supplies. Oh, and cash register back-up power supplies, major scavenger score, they are great battery maintainers over winter and they recharge too.

Rich

First Jump-it

I just got my first portable power center. This thing looks like overkill, but it had a lot of features for $79.99. It claims it will run a laptop and inkjet for 5 hours.

*1100 amp cranking power
*built-in AC inverter
*DC female outlet
*two AC outlets

Sound like the right tool for the job?

I have also used the jump start for many years I ran a cord from our bed room down to the refrig door and let it set under the trailer . last year on a very hot 6 day dry camp it ran a small fan fo 5 nights all nite long and still had power .I leave it in the truck and have a 2 male cord that plugs into the truck and it charges while driving.

My new Jump-it

I went to Harbor Freight the other day and they had one of their larger jump-its on sale for $59.99. I had been looking for one without an air pump and this looked like a pretty good deal to me. Its rated at 650 amp boost rate/1200 peak amp.:huh

My new Jump it
