This question is for old-time Washingtonians. My dad had a pop-up camper (Four Wheel) (1988) that he bought here in Washington State in 1988, new. We can't find any record of it being registered. Is it possible that style of camper did not require registration back then?

If it hasn't been registered in over seven years, it will show "as no record found" on a computer record search. Is this what happened when you went to a local liscening agency? or did you have a law enforcement officer check? In either case the person should have known and informed you. The solution is, if it has been registered in WA, is to have you local license dept run a "manual search" for it. Takes about 4-6 weeks, but puts it back in the system and then can be licensed and/or sold. (had to do that for my Corvette after my divorce and title could not be found) Oh, another question, do you have the title for it? if so, just take it down, tell them you want to license it, and they will "hand jam" it. We gave this old, damaged pop-up truck camper away last summer. The new owner is just now trying to register it and can't find a VIN number. We couldn't find a title, the owner, my dad, having passed away, we can't ask him if he had one. It had no plates. It does not show up on records; I guess they can ask for a manual search but we suspect it was not registered. Mom gave them an affadavit as to why there is no title.

Pshaaaww- --sounds sorta dead-ended then. But, look on the bright side, he didn't have to pay anything for it--- and it is no longer in the backyard. If the new, proud owner really wants to register it, he's going to have to go thru the re-inspect/new vin process. Advise him to find a friendly WSP inspection station. Larry

Older eggs (and current ones) have the VIN stamped on the tongue and I would suspect that the pop-up also has a VIN there. The way to find it (likely covered with paint) is to shine a light on the surface from the side and it will be more visible.

It's a pop-up truck camper, not a pop-up trailer. There is no tongue.

Make it easy on yourself, call Washington DMV and ask them if in 1988 a truck camper needed to be licensed/registered at that time. They're the only ones that can give you a definitive answer...we can only speculate.

Well, it isn't really my problem- at the moment it is the new owner's problem, and they tried calling DMV, if it was the case that it did not need registration, nobody they talked to knew it. They also tried the manufacturer, and nobody there remembered anything, either. I just thought someone here might have owned one and remember. Guess not.

Duhh! I didn't read closely enough! Seems like modern PUcampers have VIN plates riveted to the skin in the back by the door, but obviously that's not the case here.
