Question: Bunkbed to Sofa space issue/redo

In our 1975 trillium 1300, I would like to make the top bunk wood support piece removable. I would like to make it so that it would lift up, and then slide into place (couch back). I think the weight bearing load would be fine since it would be the same as it is when it is permanently attached but it would slip out. This way, we could raise the top bunk wood support piece and drop it down behind the back cushion when putting it down without having to take the cushions out. Has anyone tried a modification like this? Or similar? I would be interested in hearing from you.
