Rare earth magnets?

I'm in the planning stages of new cabinet doors and I'm not happy with any of the latching options that I'm finding. I've played around with some rare earth magnets at work; crazy powerful! I can put one in the palm of my hand, another on the back, and have move one another around THROUGH MY HAND The magnetic cabinet latches I've used have always been way too weak. Has anyone tried a DIY, rare earth mag. latch? What size magnets?

I did and I bought them off the internet. They were small and have a hole through them so you can attach them. I used 1 magnet and a metal holding plate.

Do a search and you will find all sorts of them.

Note: Go 2 big and you will not B able to open the drawer.

Just remember, rare earth magnets are brittle and have "exploded" on people who've used them. My Scamp has a wood interior, and uses this old skool cabinet hardware. Cabinet Hardware, Barrel Catch Metal Clip Never had a door open in transit. The screw for the knob goes through the "U" shape.

there is a shop here in canada that specializes in fine cabinetmaking and specialty gardening tools and they have several sets of rare earth magnets for different applications: some with holes in the center, some with countersunk beveled holes, some with matched cupped washers, all to acomplish the sort of thing you are asking about.

I've bought several rare earth magnets from them, they are very handy.

The ones that I use, they are round, have a counter sinked hole in the middle and the magnet portion is encased on the back and around the outside with ferrous metal. It directs the mag force to the object it is attracting and protects the magnet at the same time.
