Registering a Factory Delivery - Connecticut

We just ordered a 21' Escape for delivery in the spring. The plan is to drive out to BC (about 3000 miles) and take a leisurely trip home in June July.

We live in Connecticut. It seems from the DMV website that we should be able to register a factory purchased trailer after we get the paperwork so we have have the plates when we pick up the trailer.

Has anyone from Connecticut picked up a trailer and gotten it registered before they left?

Our daughter lives in New London, CT. I gave her a popup camper, and later a small utility trailer. Both of them had to be taken to a CT DMV office so that they could inspect the serial number on the trailer before they would register them. I have not had good experiences with CT DMV, or their inspection stations when they were in operation. Others can comment on bringing the trailer across the border. We have seen two Escapes, very nice campers!!

If the trailers are used, CT DMV needs to do a VIN verification. They no longer do this at the DMV offices and have sub-contracted it out to local garages who I think also do emissions testing.

They don't require a VIN verification if there is a manufacturer's bill of sale, which is why I'm asking the question. It seems it should work, but as you say, with DMV, who knows.

Thanks Bill, the difference registering new versus used makes sense. I was dealing with used trailers. Best of luck with your situation, have a great trip.

In Va. on a new trailer you will not have a title to start with so you will need a certificate of origin from the Mfg. This is where the DMV will get the VIN from for your new title. They will also want a Bill of Sale or Invoice so they can figure out how much Tax you will have to pay them. Best thing to do is go visit your local DMV for details.

Check with mf'r

Casita (Texas) gives a (60 day, I think it was) temporary tag. I drove home from there to CT, lovely trip by the way, waited nearly the entire 60 days & registered here without question or problem. No inspection required.
