Registering a Scamp 16 in Wisconsin

Hi everyone.
After a year and a half of getting beaten to the sale over and over we are finally owners of a 07 Scamp 16. I have a question for owners in Wisconsin and that is did you register it or not? Do you have to and if you do, are you stuck re-registering it every year or 2. I was told by a very good source (state trooper friends) that you don't have to register if the trailer is under 3500lbs. Well the RV place we found it at wrote it up as weighing 3500lbs which they found on the tag and demand that I transfer title and register it. I can see the title but know that it only weighs maybe 2000lbs. I think they took the axle rating. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

And yes, we were ecstatic to finally join the Scamp/Casita club. We had to check Craigslist in four states literally every hour to be first in line for the few good deals! And after one weekend in it I can see why they are hard to get.

I went "rogue" since purchasing mine last year. But recently read the WisDOT page where it explains what needs registration and license. My interpretation was that regardless of weight, if you have hard sides, it needs to be registered/licensed. I have since sent in my paperwork. I have yet to see how it's been handled. Mine is a 13 foot Scamp so well under 3500 pounds. Unless someone weighs in sooner, I'll update when I hear back.

I believe Tonia is correct, as it is a recreational vehicle it must be registered. I have to renew each year and I believe the cost is $15.

Hi Dave, to FiberglassRV, we're glad you're here.

Can't help with your question, because I live in Oregon. But wanted to say HI!

Now, where are the pictures

Who would issue a plate to a motor vehicle or other wheeled vehicle that can't be ID'd by a VIN on a registration? State of M. Mouse? Please don't tell me next that there are staties somewhere giving the advice that you don't need a plate!

We just bought our 16' in April, so I just went through this. It does need to be titled and licensed in WI unfortunately. They'll charge you sales tax when you transfer the title, and as stated before the yearly fee is around $15.

Utility trailers, snowmobile trailers etc do not need to be licensed in WI.

It is based on GVWR, which is 3500 for a 16' scamp

I registered mine and yes have to do it every year but I am convinced you do not have to. I thought it may be less conspicuous in other states if I plated it. For we hat it.s worth. Pete
