Regulator on Propane Tank

We have a 1979 Acorn Trailer that came with a furnace and two burner cooktop. We removed the furnace. We intend to use the cooktop. The propane tank that came with the trailer is really old. The connector on the top of the tank is not the same as the ones on the tanks that are currently available and we will get a new tank. Question: There is a regulator on the exterior piping of the tank. Is a regulator necessary for running the cooktop, or was this for the furnace? Anybody know? Thanks

You need the regulator. Get a new two stage regulator and a new tank at the same time. They are not expensive. Be sure to cap off the furnace gas pipe safely. Costco often has the LP tanks.
