Replacing plexiglass windows in Boler
Hi there,
We have had our 72 Boler for a year now and are beginning to clean her up. I live in Vancouver and was wondering if anyone has used a Vancouver glass company to make windows for their Boler. We popped out all of our windows (we needed to repair some leaks) and are looking to get a Vancouver company to make windows for us.
Has anyone in Vancouver done this before? Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks!

Hi Steve. to FiberglassRV
How many windows and what's wrong with what you have? Jalousie windows can be rebuilt. Out of all the things to replace on an older all-molded-towable, replacing the windows rates right up to number 1 or 2 in cost. PLUS, jalousie windows are no longer being made (exact replacements). If you put in the radius corner windows, you'll need to do some "corner" fiberglass work. Are you prepared to paint the trailer too?
RV Windows by Sun-View Industries may be about 250 miles from you.
Let us know specifically what you need. We're here to help you.
Pictures? Did you say you had pictures to share?

Thanks Donna,
I am going to rebuild my jalousie windows, but I want to replace the larger plexiglass windows in the front and back - they are scratched and, well a little hazy.
We are going to paint the Boler as well. I am in the midst of prepping her for paint.

Okay, now we're have a bit clearer picture Hopefully someone will be along shortly to give you information where you can locally purchase the gasket and lockstrip, plus the plexiglass.
I love those old fashioned Jalousie windows. Have you checked out Ian Giles site for help? Proud Canadian Lots of good stuff, especially for Bolers.

Ahhhh the plexiglass window torture test.
It's not a fun job but with patience and an extra set of hands it can be done. Are you using original seals or aftermarket? Originals have a lockstrip that add an extra dimension to the whole process.
There are some issues with those videos. Don't use screwdrivers. A slip will scratch the plastic or puncture the seal. Make your own plastic tool. Lockstrip goes on the outside, not on the inside - it's a must.
general rules:
1. Leave the plastic shipping film on until you've installed them.
2. Drop the seal in hot water for 10min before hand to soften it.
3. 4.5mil thickness plexi maximum.
4. Be patient. You're bending the sheets into compound angles on the corners, takes some time.
5. If you're using seals with a lockstrip, get a lockstrip tool. I borrowed one from the tech at the local Speedy Autoglass, otherwise order one off Amazon.
6. They are a tight fit, keep your old windows and use as a template. Not all windows openings are exactly accurate. You can cut your own with a jigsaw. Use a 32 TPI sheet metal blade.

1974 Boler Thing 1 & thing 2
We have 2 bolers 73 and 74 and have completely gutted Thing 2 (the 73) including popping out the plexiglass windows. I was able to take the old windows to a local glass company and they were easily able to use them as a template for new ones. Also purchased new rubber seal at same place. We are in Lumby and the glass shops I contacted in Vernon were all able to do this but did not all have the same price. Check your local glass shops and take in the old windows and rubber seals to ensure you get exactly what you need. We were also given a handy polyethylene tool to help us put the windows and seals back in place. Still a work in progress. Will be replacing the windows on Thing 1 when we finish up the first project.
Cheers

Since you have a 72 Boler, you essentially have a 72 Scamp as well. I hope to be corrected on this if I'm wrong, but I can't see a difference between them except for those very cool tail lights that Scamp apparently decided to leave out of their build (damn). My point is: the old front and rear plexi windows are available from Scamp.
Windows : 19 X 36 Plexiglass Window
I would give them a call. But first I would take Daniel's advice. If you can repair the windows, that would be the way to go. Apparently, plastic will always be vulnerable to scratching, so it's something you will eventually have to deal with, whether the windows are new or old.

Hi Tracey,
I just talked to a fellow at crystal glass and he said that it would probably cost about $250 per window.
Could you give me a little more detail on what you had done? Did you have the rubber seals or did you have them use new rubber?
Thanks

Sorry I did have the rubber black seal already that I ordered from the Scamp website. I did not know that Ron had the window rubber seal in his shop already. So that price he gave might be what it is today with the rubber seal. I just found my receipt from 2 years ago and total with tax and labour was $364. I guess I should have said per window. I went to Ron, because he has done over 25 bolers.

Wow! Those prices make me feel pretty good!
I went to a local window place and got the two pieces of plexiglass for under 100$, including the trimming of the corners... I got the seal for under 3$ per foot so that should cost under 70$. The installation is on me...
Things are moving along! I'll show pictures soon!
