Ripping off an awning

The awning is jammed, and it is not something we want to spend any money on repairing. We want to pull apart the mechanism, junk all the arms/legs, and just saving the fabric, the rail screwed to the Bigfoot and the bits connecting the two. Then we'll do a maual rollout and tent pole thang.

Any advice on pulling this thing apart? I don't want any super-under-tension springs flying off when I mess with the begger. Here's what the two end mechs look like:

Thanks :wave

How About This?

I do not know if I can be of help on taking the old one apart. I do not see enough detail in the pictures to be able to be of much help. However, I was impressed with the way European Carivans (RVs) use their awnings. I have thought that this would be a good alternative for round sided fiberglass RVs. It did not seem to take any longer to do it this way then using an A&E unit. Any comment out there? - John -

first off, Kitty, Call bigfoot or the company that makes the awning. I don't want you to get boooonged either.

John, Lex showed us how to put one of those up. I do like them. I just wasn't sure about getting a breeze is I'm sitting under it. can you buy one here in the Americas?
choices and more

No joy, Jana. The company that made the awning (Sunburst by Norseman) is apparently long gone. That was part of the reason we deceided to chuck it. We're also eager to lose any unnecessary weight.

Yup, I like 'em, too. We had a Danish-made CombiCamp tent trailer that had a zip-on awning that was very sweet. I like the simplicity/lightness of such things a lot.

Awning

You might try sending a note to Mike Rossman RV. They've been a bigfoot dealer forever

Take it all off

Kitty - Having worked construction for a while, an old axiom is that "it is earier to repair complex things on the bench than on the box(building)." Is it possible to remove the legs etc. and then the entire unit before you try to disassemble it? It looks like there is a rail that the unit slides into and then has set screws holding the ends of the unit?
Maybe you can remove the set screws and get someone to help you slide it out and then disassemble the mechanism?
Just a thought. (grew up out by WW:conf and the pen.)

Joe,

I can't find him on a google search. Can you point me at his website?

That's a good idea. I'll give it a try after I get back from a run over the nearest mountain pass this weekend.

BTW, "WW:conf and the pen"? Western Wa and the peninsula?
