rock damage caused by TV

Hi y'all

my wife (Karen) and I went for 2 months into Canada and Alaska this past summer and fall. Others have posted on gas costs, it was about $ 6 a gallon . Std price in Alaska. Round trip 9500 miles, from Layton UT. up thru Alberta, into British Columbia , Yukon territories into Alaska and making a loop through south and then northern Alaska, up to the Arctic Circle in Alaska and, the Yukon territories. We would spend some time on dirt roads. 1993 Big Foot 13'. TV is a 06 4runner, with std. mud flaps. ( put extended flaps on if you plan on going; saw trailer with rubber inner tube pieces extending to the ground bolted on to the existing mud flaps) The gravel flew up and pelted the front skin of the trailer, from the bottom curve to the middle band strap. I have thought I could use fiberglass resin to spread over the pits, (hundreds of them) and sand it down, but a color match would be poor. what do you think about having the front bottom section covered with rhino lining? Any other ideas ?

later Kenny

Great idea, and you can even get it in colors.

"Rhino Lining" is what I am having put on the lower front of my Bigfoot. I'm having it done at the Escape factory, where it is an option on the ones they produce. It comes in white, which is what they use on theirs, so I'm having mine done in white as well. I have also seen black bed liner on the front of trailers and that looks good, too!

My Burro is heading to the paint shop within the next month, and I was planning to ask them to squirt some of the same type of stuff on the front for the same reasons. I think it also comes in clear, so if available that's what we'll do.

But for damage that's already been done, I don't know what your best bet would be. I guess a bed liner could possibly go on thick enough to disguise the divots?

I've heard that Rhino lining is very heavy. Does anyone know how much weight having the front lower potion done would ad? My concern is that it's directly added to the tongue weight, which I will have to watch carefully.

Cheers,
Mark

I'm pretty sure that the bed liner spray or even the roll on kind will cover any small chips and dings.

I really don't think it's going to make that much of a difference.

We had the front of ours sprayed with Line-X which had the color match pigments added. The result was good and the front of the trailer isn't accumulating more pits. We covered from the belly band down. I think Line - X and Rhino coating are equivalent. Their warranties are nearly the same.

I'm not going to go back and read the Legacy posts... read them the first time but, if you're interested in a DIY solution, members here have used a couple of different coatings and these have worked well:

Grizzly Grip

Durabak

If you can, and no matter what option you go with, please post before and after pics if you can.

3M makes a paint protection film that goes on the hood of cars. The front of the trailer would be a great application for this product. Very durable and light weight.

I went to the legacy posts and the weight of the 1/4 inch rhino lining could weigh 20lbs. perhaps they could put it on thinner. I have a shop a couple miles away. I will go in and ask.
