Rock guard / window protection

I two pieces of plexiglass for my Boler's front and back windows. I still have my old ones. Some guy on youtube painted an old plexiglss window to make a rock guard. I already have one made of fiberglass but am wondering if it'd be worth making one with an old window since it seems lighter and I need to change/repair the metal clips on my rock guard anyway.

Has anyone thought about using a painted old window instead of curtains at night? The main inconvenient would be to find a spot for it during the day...
