Scamp 16 bunk beds

Hi, I've got a 16' scamp with all of the front bunk parts missing. Could anyone post a few detailed pictures of how the bunks look in the up and down positions and showing what the hardware arrangement is? I haven't a clue what's supposed to be here or how it's supposed to work. I've seen photos of bunks up, but no details were visible.

Some. Now I know how the pole side works, which looks easy enough to make. I still have no idea what shape the plywood is or how it's connected.



All I have is this ledge with some weird draw-latch type hardware on the left, and what looks like a mating hook for it on the right. Doesn't make any sense. Is it just supposed to be a piano hinge that runs the length of that ledge? I'd really love to see one in the down position with the cushions removed.

Pictures of the seat back with out cover. The back is screwed to the rail under the front window. The bottom cushon is just cloth covered foam no wood backer board. These are just some pictures I had in the computer.

Total length and heigth. The wings are held on with piano hinges and the foam is glued to the board.

Wow, thank you Eddie. Let me see if I'm interpreting the pictures correctly: the large piece is cut to fit the curve of the front of the shell. It is fastened with hinges to the ledge that is already attached to the shell. From that hinge picture it looks like it actually sits on top of that ledge when in the bed position. The big piece is actually three pieces with "wings" on the ends so that it will bend to fit the curve of the shell as you move it into the bench position. Is that correct?
That third picture has me baffled.
Also, is the cushion normally upholstered right onto the plywood for the bunk?
If I understood the other thread about the bunk support posts, the bed should extend to the sides of the posts rather than sitting on top of them? I guess if you're making your own posts you could choose to do that part either way.

The cover slides over the plywood back which has the foam glued to it. I forgot to mention the bananna cushon. The bottom has two cushons. The back edge of the bottom cushon (about 6") is cut off and covered seperately. When the bunk is down the bananna cushon is removed to allow the back to swing down to the fiberglass base. Most people store the bananna cushon on top of the seat back (bunk) under the front window. Sorry my neighbor borrowed my camera so no pictures of the lower cushons.

Eddie, I think I grasp the whole thing now. Thanks for the detailed description. That explains that odd banana shaped cushion I couldn't find a home for. Apparently I have a full set of cushions even though there is no bunk/seatback.

One thing that concerns me is the little ledge that supports the forward (outer shell) side of the bunk. It doesn't seem as though there is much holding that on. Though it doesn't wiggle or anything. Is that a weak spot or common problem of any sort?

I think you're justified in your concerns. That part is fiberglassed to the body. I believe that's the reason for the weight limit on the upper bunk. It would be bad enough to be the person on the upper bunk if it fell... but it would be worse to be the person on the bottom.

The bunk ledge is just a glassed in piece if wood, besides providing an attachment point for the bunk it provides additional support to the front of the trailer. The only issue with this board that I have seen is the window seal leaks and the board can rot.
If the bunk function is not needed some people remove the bunk because it is fairly heavy and it takes up a fair amount of space. If you sleep up front it is much more comfortable with the bunk removed. A lounge chair cushon from Lowes or Walmart make a light seat back cushon and is fairly inexpensive after the summer season.

I'm glad you mentioned that it provides support to the front. After thinking about whether or not I need a bunk I will probably not restore it to the original configuration. With that decision I might have thought about removing that ledge but now I won't do that. Thanks!

41-1/4" wide
2" out from the shell at the ends
3-1/2" out from the shell in the middle
Material is 3/4" thick plus 1/8" of ensolite

Mine's missing the rest of the bunk but the ledge looks original.
