Scamp 19 Axle Issue Question

Jon in AZ responded to my introduction and asked me if I have checked my axles for the dreaded axle issue on some 19 and some 16's.

He suggested I post some pictures of my axle and brackets for a look see from some of the members to see if I am OK.

So if you are experienced in this please take look and let me know what you think.

I am sorry I could not get the second picture to flip right side up when posted,

Arthur

I can't see the pictures you posted, but this old post has some photos of affected axles. http://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/f...ers-31032.html

Scamp Has Taken Responcibility

Keith at Scamp looked and my pictures and accepted that they need to cover the cost of the fix.

Welder is coming tomorrow to look it over!

Scamp 19 Axle Issue Question

Wow, that was fast! Glad it is going to be taken care of. I'm curious what the fix is exactly.

BTW- for some reason, I can't see the pictures in this thread, either. The ones in your album are fine.

The fix

Jon

The frame is off center the axle bracket so they marry (weld) 16 inches of heavy square tube to the frame over the bracket to share the weight and strain across the whole bracket and axle,

Thanks again for making me aware of this!

For some reason the pics didn't make it

After 12 years of service (without failure?) would it be fair to say that Scamp has "extended a courtesy" rather than "taken responsibility"?

Responsibility?

I used that word because they said it that way.

That is a testament to Scamp!

I would not, and for the same reason I expected Honda to replace the airbags on my 10 year old, well out of warranty vehicle. There is no expiration date on a safety-related manufacturing defect, and the fact that the airbag had not, as yet, exploded in my face is hardly the point.

Arthur, if it were my trailer, I'd want a whole new axle under it, correctly aligned with the frame.

Given the age of the trailer I would negotiate with Scamp for a cost-share. Since a 12 year old axle is perhaps 60% used up, assuming a 20 year lifespan, I'd be willing to pay 60% of the cost and ask Scamp to pay 40%.

Now that I might consider a "courtesy."

Floyd, I think it is a responsibility because complaints to the proper authorities could result in a recall of all their 5Rs for those years, to be inspected and/or corrections to be made. They are a hazard on our roads and could result in fatalities.
