Scamp Countertops

I have a 1996 Scamp 16' Deluxe that is in excellent shape except the countertops. At some point water got in around the sink and the particle board expanded. My plan is to remove them, have new ones made and then re-install them. My question is does anyone have any idea about how the countertops are connected in the deluxe scamp? I would like to get them out with as little additional damage as possible. Also what type of materials would folks recommend so that this doesn't happen again?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Debbie

I would look inside the cabinet for little "L" brackets, or possibly wood cleats that have screws going into the top from underneath. I would replace with laminate glued to plywood, not particle board.

I'll second Fred's suggestion of using plywood. It weighs less and is stronger than particle board; to save more weight you can drop down to 1/2" thick plywood. The counter tops in my Scamp are laminate over 1/4" ply, but they sit on top of the Scamp Standard fiberglass cabinet counter top, which provides the counter's structure and support.
