I'll second Fred's suggestion of using plywood. It weighs less and is stronger than particle board; to save more
weight you can drop down to 1/2" thick plywood. The counter tops in my
Scamp are laminate over 1/4" ply, but they sit on top of the Scamp Standard
fiberglass cabinet counter top, which provides the counter's structure and support.
