Scamp door rubs on belly band -
What is the diagnosis for a scamp door rubbing on the belly band? Over the winter something seems to have changed and the door now rubs on the belly band. Do the hinge springs need to be replaced? Door warping?
All ideas welcome -
Thanks,
John

I assume you mean that it contacts the belly band when opened far enough to latch it open? Mine did that as well. My solution is to extend the leg on the door holder a couple of inches, which changes the angle enough to avoid contact. Modifying the taper at the end of the belly band would do it, but would require more work.

I applied a short piece of 3/4" W x 1/4 " thick self adhering foam weather stripping to the belly band . Door now hits the foam when open not the metal belly band. I used to get black marks on my white door from the metal now nothing . Total time to apply the foam about 15 seconds and foam is still there after a year,

John, you did not say how old your Scamp is but they do from time to time need new hinge springs and balls which Scamp sells, which may or may not solve your problem. If it did not do that before then I would try replacing them first to fix it.

while that may be a good solution, it must be said that it may exacerbate the problem of the belly band acting as a fulcrum point to stress the door when latched open, causing the door to distort over time.

Our Scamp is a 2004, I think I will try the new hinge springs optiion as it seems the only component that might fail.
Thanks for the help.

Please report your results, I can't fathom how the springs could affect this problem.

I'll be interested too. Ours is a '91 and the door rubs between the two hinges. I assume the give in the worn pins is allowing it to hang inward under its own weight and hit the side. We have a set of the replacement pins and springs from Scamp- just need to take the door off and polish the old hinges and install.

John I am not sure but perhaps there is a way of just adjusting/tightening them?

I have occasionally found the casting to be wallowed out. Drilling them out to the next size up would make the hole round again.
In this case... Are we discussing a misaligned door , or one that simply strikes the bellyband when opened far enough?

The door rubs on the corner of the belly band when opening far enough for the latch. How would the door become misaligned if the hinge assembly was not failing somehow?
I'm not sure the new springs and ball assembly will fix the problem either, but it's the easiest for me to try. Unless the door has warped or the belly band has expanded outward what could cause this to start happening? I could place some shim stock behind where the hinge attaches to the trailer body but this may goober up how the door shuts.

Mine did that new. Nothing's changed in 6.5 years.
