Scamp hinge bolts

Hi there I replaced the hinges on my Boler with new Scamp hinges. Now the old hinges were threaded for a bolt and the Scamp ones are not. Since it is fairly soft metal should I be screwing a larger bolt into these hinges to thread them? Or should I just use a bolt and nut combo?

I will use stainless bolts either method which may help with the threading option.

I dunno if the hinges on our Scamp were threaded or not. If they were, a previous owner had drilled out the threads and used 1/4 - 20 cap screws and double nuts of a unknown quality. They worked just fine, but were rusted on the surface.

I replaced them with stainless fasteners of the same size, except instead of double nutting, I used stainless Ny-loc nuts. I also replaced all the hinge mounting bolts for the same reason.

Scamp hinges are not threaded and they use a Brass Ball, Spring, Nut & Bolt, you can check it out on their web site under parts/hardware. It shows a pretty good picture . TimClick image for larger version

I believe the OP is referring to the holes that hold the hinges to the trailer. If you want to thread them you will need a tap and a proper size drill. You can't just drive a bolt in to make the threads it won' hold. For example if you want to use a 1/4-20 bolt you need a 1/4-20 tap and a #7 drill bit. The hole will be slightly smaller then the tap so you are left with the right amount of material for the threads. If the hole is already drilled and not the correct size you may be able to go up to the next bolt size which would be 5/16-18 and require a letter F drill. I repair machinery for a living so if you need any further help let me know.
