Scamp title incorrect-help

I have a new old Scamp, and the title is incorrect. It does match the license plate.

The year on the title is 1970

The make on the title is MANS (This came from Washington state. Oregon DMV has no idea what it means.

The style is RT

The length is 13

Neither Washington nor Oregon could find the VIN, so they made one

up . Oregon is OR688.

I found the VIN # on the tongue. There are 2 numbers.

The top number is 9.80

About 3/4" below that is E.1.5.411

I need help. I think the "E" is the vin for Scamps. But don't know how to decode it.

What does MANS mean?

I thought that the first Scamp was 1971. Can this be a 1970?

I think Scamp had a fire and the early records burned.

Help, please. Jill

The "E" in the serial # likely stands for "Eveland's" which is the manufacturer of Scamp trailers. "MANS" could be "MANufactured by Scamp"
Trailers didn't have VIN numbers in 1970.
If you have a new number issued by the state, then you could simply stamp it into the top of the RH tongue using welder's stamps, and obliterate the original.
As for the 1970 title simply assume they made a few before JAN.1971.
Now you have a correct title issued by the state.
These trailers were sold with a certificate of origin with a title issued by the state of the buyer's residence.
Some states didn't even title trailers under a certain size.
If you own it and you know it and the state has given you a title...
Don't Worry be happy.

I agree with Floyd. Scamp stamped month and year of MFG. with the serial numbers. (9.80) Sept 1980. Like Donna suggested post pictures of rear and sides of the trailer.

It can't be a 1970 - Evelands didn't start manufacturing Scamps until 1972

The cryptic serial # may also be from one of the Scamp build your own kits from the early days.

Photos may help ID the year. There were subtle differences over the years.
Be happy you have a title.

Back in the day the DMV's would use local cryptic codes. It took a lot of calling to the New York DMV where it was registered to find an old timer that could explain the difference. He told me that before VINS they would use short codes in front of the serial number to describe the type of trailer.
His explanation was that TC = Trailer Camper.

That leads me to think your RT = Recreational Trailer

It might be worth your while to see if there is an old timer around in the Oregon DMV that might remember some of the quirky things they did when registering these trailers before the start of 13 digit VINS.

my 1971 Boler I believe may be one of the first American Bolers manufactured by Evelands under contract with Boler as the serial # is under 1200 and I suspect they started with #1000 as other Bolers from other plants of the same time frame are much higher numbered

and also being a 1971 and the first ones out in 68/69 they likely could not have produced enough to get to my serial # in that short time frame if they started with #0001

Often assumptions can not stand up to scrutiny and so sometimes should not be subjected to it!

Remember we are talking about a trailer which the state agrees is a 1970 MANS. (Who's to argue with the state of Oregon)...

If the State of Oregon issued a vin number then you are go to go, go camping be happy. My experience with the Oregon DMV has been very positive with vin/license problems they are very helpful to positive people.

Hi John,

I tracked the serial #'s of boler Americans for a while. With the odd exception of a few that have 3 digit #'s the majority are 4 digits that start with either a 1, 3 or 5 and the last 3 digits are usually below 600.

My theory on this is that the boler American was produced in 3 plants. The first digit of 1, 3 or 5 signified the plant with the remaining digits the serial # in some form. I could be wrong but my theory explains the lack of serial #'s starting with 2's or 4's. Keep in mind the boler American was initially intended to be manufactured in 5 locations. To date we only know of 3 that ended up in production with the 1972 model being the first production year.
