Scamp VIN location

For those of us who have been restoring older eggs...

I needed to get a rubbing or a photo of my '86 Scamp's VIN number, but it was no where to be found. A search began. I did find out where it should be.

"On the top, right side of the frame, just behind the coupler." .....and, "It is also typed on a label attached to the inside if the same frame member."

But, there was no label on my 86, and I saw no stamped numbers on its frame. I also wondered, which is the "right" side? Out comes the paint remover solvents, wire brushes, steel wool, etc. Cleaning off 24 years of paint on the "right" side led to near panic - until I figured out that the "right" side was not the street side, but the curb side.

After more paint remover the stamped 17 digit VIN began to appear, right where they said it would be - on the CURB side, top of frame, just behind the coupler, along with the date, 8/86, above it.

See it in the picture? No? Of course you can't.

Whew! After steel wooling and metal polishing It was still hard to read because of corrosion and wear, and a not very deep factory stamping, but it was unmistakeable. A photo would have to do. All efforts to get a decent rubbing failed.

Dumb question. Why do you need a rubbing of a VIN #? Don't you have a title or a registration? A plate?

If you want a label all you have to do is phone Scamp. Give them your VIN number and they will send you a new label or at least they did for me.

Cyndi B - you had to ask! Previous owner didn't have a title or record of previous registration since he bought it as a salvaged project from long deceased owners' surviving relatives who were just happy to be rid of it, and he sold it to me with just a (notarized) bill of sale, which doesn't cut it with the NJ Div of Motor Vehicles, who are making me jump through a few hoops before they will grant me an emergency title. They wanted (among other things) a rubbing of the VIN, or, a photo of it.
