In fifty years of camping, I've never had anything stolen. In fact, one windy day in Colorado a twenty dollar bill got blown into our campsite and nobody in the campground claimed ownership. So, I guess I'm ahead of the game.

The only theft I've ever experienced was in an Oregon State Park. GRRRRRRRRR. I say do what you feel you need to do to be comfortable. Camping is about fun, not anxiety. Under these circumstances, what someone else has had happened to them or not should have no bearing on what you chose to do.

We've camped all over Europe and much of eastern Canada over the years and our experience is that campers are pretty honest folk - the world over. One time at the end of a long days drive we set up quickly in a new campground and headed for the little store for some things for supper. Coming back half an hour later our neighbours pointed out that I had left my brand new and quite expensive Olympus camera sitting on the hood of our car. They'd been keeping an eye on it for us!

I've often seen lawn chairs used to save a camping spot, or maybe they were just out for a walk.

When I was in the Navy during the 'Nam era, some 35 years ago, my Company Commander in boot camp told everyone in the barracks, (Quote) "If you want to keep your stuff from walking off, lock it up! "Nuff said...

In my Navy Boot Camp (1961) we didn't have to lock up our stuff because: a) There were no doors or locks on gear lockers and b) If you touched anything that wasn't yours, you could get "Keel-hauled" no questions asked.
With that experience, I don't worry about leaving stuff out and about in campgrounds and have never lost anything.

I don't lock up chairs and stuff outdoors either. But I do put my doggie in the trailer when I go for a shower cuz she's so cute, someone might try to steal her 😊 giggle, shedding fur all over the place...

We use a cable to secure our bicycles. We used to lock them only when we left camp, but after one got stolen last summer while we slept, now we lock them whenever we can't keep an eye on them.
Everything else is well-used Walmart issue, not worth the hassle to secure. The one item I'd hate most to lose is actually the ugliest of the lot: a 30-year-old Coleman stove.
I'm not sure about the idea of a 120 dB alarm, though. False alarms could really get annoying.

Have you noticed how nobody reacts when a car alarm goes off?
