Shelves

At the cherokee meet someone showed me a wire rack shelving unit for the closet just inside the Scamp door, that they purchased from Ikea. I found them at Target tonight.

Yeaaaa!

Well... I'm half done installing them. One problem is that the closet is not square, the top curves. The poles are two sections, which screw together and are exactly the height of the interior hall (6 ft?) which is taller than the interior of the closet. So the poles top half must be cut. They are chromed steel so a hack saw is called for. Do i sound full of excuses?

The next problem is that the folks who showed me their shelves had cut a door in the lower section. I actually installed the base poles and a bottom shelf an inch or so off the floor. I am waffling about the door cut since i am about to move up to a 19' and sell this one. I cannot imagine that the next owner would not LOVE my mods but...

And so i waffle. Do i proceed? Do i not and perform the mod in my new (to me) 19' scamp? If i could find matching doors local i would just go for it. I don't want to have a hole, i don't want to have one mismatched door, i don't want to replace every door. I will probably buy a door from scamp for the new rig, assuming that the doors for a 95 scamp are still available.

It seems unwise to make a door mod for a 2009 Scamp that i will sell soon.

But i have the shelves!

There are lots of threads here devoted to shelving. My DH built a custom set of wood shelves and did not change anything structural on the Scamp. The upright supports are each cut in two pieces and fastened while inside the cabinet. The shelves are custom made for the space and are mostly adjustable. The bottom shelf is loose and has a finger-hold in it so we can lift it to access the wheel-well storage area. Sorry, no photo.

If you are going to sell your rig soon, I vote for NOT cutting. The new owners can decide on their own mods. 'Just my 2 cents.

No need to assume it you can count on it! Thats the wonderful thing about Scamp not having changed a whole lot over the years. I have purchased two doors from Scamp. One was for the bottom half of the closest where I installed adjustable wire shelving and you would never know the top door was 20 years older than the bottom one. They have changed the knobs in the past couple of years though as the company that makes them no longer makes that design.... I had to hunt through some old hardware stores and bought up the few old style types they had.
