sikaflex: same as silicone?

I bought a tube of this as it seems to be what people use on fiberglass sailboats. If I'm heading for doom here, please stop me.

No, Sikaflex is NOT silicone. Thanks goodness. But what kinda of Sikaflex did you get? 221 is recommended.

Sikaflex is a one part polyurethane sealant/adhesive...there are a few dozen varieties including some used for attaching body panels on autos/trucks...I believe Donna has steered you to the correct version.....

Candace, be aware that Sikaflex 221 is extremely sticky and messy. You'll want to tape around anything you don't want this stuff on... I used Blue Painters tape. Too, wear rubber gloves. Because if you get this stuff on you (or anyplace) it will need to 'wear' off. This is one time you want to be neat and tidy. Good luck!

Thanks so much everybody! I'm planning to use it to seal the bellyband and windows. Painters tape sounds like a wise idea, gloves too. Cheers and happy camping!

For the windows, I would recommend first removing and re-installing the windows using butyl tape to re-seal between the window flange and the fiberglass body.

Kootenay Gal..

I echo John's suggestion.. Take the windows out, replace the 3/4in plywood (bevel and all) that the windows are screwed into, clean up the old gunk around the window openings, butyl tape the backside of the window frame and then use stainless screws to put it all back together again..

Butyl tape is best for the windows. Once you do that task it is unlikely you will ever have to do it again in your lifetime as this product is that good. You should not even have to caulk around the windows. However if for some reason you did need to take out the windows it will be easy to do so unlike some of the other choices of adhesive caulking. Makes it easy on the next owner too!
