skunky water in our 60 gallon water tank

which has real nice water in the tank and were down to about 45 gallons with this real skunky smell in the tank which is in the water. We would like to know if we can add say 1/2 cup of bleach and top up with water if that would help or just not top it up and still put in 1/2 cup of bleach and wondering if that would help our situation as finding water where were at that is good drinking is not a easy feat.
