strange chemical-y smell

just brought home my "new" 2010 casita. it has been too cold to allow me to spend much time in it yet; but, i noticed an odd smell immediately. it isn't exactly musty/moldy: almost like some sort of off-gassing substance. is this common?

Is it winterized? Could be the smell from the anti-freeze. Frankly, I think that stuff stinks.

If it is an ammonia smell you have a refrigerator problem or if you use a chemical in the toilet you may be smelling that. Hope it's not the refrigerator. That would be expensive.

nope--not ammonia. i haven't had it long enough to have done anything to it at all--just a couple of days. it has been winterized, though; i'm hoping that is all it is!

Some so called "odor eliminators" are actually the worst offenders.

Or, some of us use various aromatic things to keep critters out for the winter, or when not traveling. Maybe you will find mothballs, dryer sheets, or similar.

I never heard of it. Fresh Cab seems pricey, but it gets 4 1/2 stars on Amazon.

I found that being anal about crumbs, open food, leftovers or garbage is the key. Grass seed, which used to be stored in its plastic bag on a shelf in the garage, is now in a sealed metal can.

I've used fresh cab for 2 years now in my scamp. I put one sachet inside the fridge service door, one under each dinette seat, one in under sink cab, and one on floor by scamp door.

"fresh cab", it is--sorry about the word reversal. brain is frozen. i had mouse problems this past year with the riding mower. i'm going to tuck a pack under the motor cowling next winter and hope that works. it is best when used in a closed space....one thing for sure; the trailer will sure smell a lot better than it does now after i toss in a couple of packs!!

Oh heavens no worries. Were all learners here! If you don't want to buy on amazon your local tractor supply carries it too. I think around $14 and change. I love the stuff.

I also fashion service and upper vent door mouse protection out of hardware cloth. Shape by cutting and bending over edges, then zip and or wire tie it on each winter. Also do water heater vent grate. A fellow member here taught me that.

Finally I have a small hand held shark vacuum and I vacuum out the trailer really well before storage. I never leave anything Inside for winter storage; no food, nothing that smells like food.

Next year I'm going to start taking curtains out too. Gives me an excuse to wash them. All cushions I can take out, I currently do.

I know that any time I go into my trailer when it has been sitting closed up and has anti freeze in the system it has a very distinct unpleasant smell.
