Tail light help - 1981 Bigfoot

I'd like to replace the taillights on my Bigfoot with some bright new LED lights that I picked up at Walmart.
The installation instructions require cutting a 4.5" oval in the fiberglass and slipping in a rubber gasket which the light then gets pushed into to make it waterproof.
Has anyone done this? I'm concerned that there won't be anything to support the gasket under the fiberglass so when I try to push the light into the gasket, I won't be able to get them to stay together.

Thanks!

I did round ones on the taillights and marker lights on my LoveBug, It worked great the fit was solid and looked good.
Actually, You don't say which BigFoot, Do you know the thickness of the fiberglass? Look at the gasket. The fiberglass can't be much thicker than the groove provided, or it can't work. 5/32" to 5/16" is a nice range.

I'd worry about what's behind the fiberglass. Are the tail lights going to back into cabinet? Otherwise you'd be pushing the bucket of the tail light into the interior on a wall.

I'd buy surface mount LED tail lights before I cut two 4.5" ovals into the body. But, that's me!

Like Donna said, surface mount is the way to go.

Curses.
I guess I'll be returning them to Walmart. I should have known such a good deal was TOO good

Thanks for stopping me before I put the big holes in the fiberglass!

If you have a Princess Auto in your neighbourhood, you should check out these lights: http://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/f...uto-47736.html
