Lanny,

Count me in as another customer in waiting. Hope you get your cue caught up soon and can give the lens some attention again. Looking forward to your progress. I will probably get two sets of the red and amber. One to use and one to store just in case.

Thank you for your efforts!

Thanks

Hey Perk, So far the process is going well. I finally got in my new 5 gal pressure pot I'll need because the lenses are large. I have finished the prototype except for the last sanding and painting.
The process is to clean up an existing lens as best I can. Make a mold then cast a prototype in an opaque material, fill the dents and scratches with a body filler then sand. Repeat the process then paint with several coasts of gloss paint.

I will then have to carefully cut the two pieces, amber and red, apart make a mold of each then cast the lenses seperatly. I can only cast one red or one amber a day as even the 5 gal pot will only hold one mold that size.

Then the two pieces will need to be re-glued.
So the process will not be over night but I am making headway. I'll post here when I get the first one done.
Thanks
Lanny

Lanny,
Thanks so much for your continuing efforts with the lenses. CindyL and I are still interested in getting a set (2-color if possible).

Yes, a big thumbs up to Lanny for stepping up to fill this need.

Once you get this process down, I'm sure you could make a small profit on eBay.

Lanny,

Sounds very promising. Let us know if we need to hire the kid across the street to cut your grass or take out the trash. Give us the number of the local restaurant that delivers and we can order delivery for you. Anything we can do it make life better while you are in the process to avoid distractions. Thanks for the efforts and expense to make these lens. I know I am way back in line but I am excited about your progress. Good luck and all the best.

Lens Prototype

Here is a pict of the first run. I need to wait three more days till the paint fully curs then fill sand the places I've circled that still have some small pits. As you can see the word UHaul and Top will be less distinct but till there. They will not be as good as the original but hopefully good enough to suit you.

I think they look very good! They look a lot better than the 27 year old ones that are currently being used. You are doing fabulous ... congrats on a your success to date.

I'm still interested in an all red lens, and better yet if it was one piece. Thanks for your continuing work on this project. Bob

Lanny, I'm happy to see you are still at it. I think the example looks great. Remember to keep me on your list. Solid red or amber and red would be fine with me.
Thanks for the update.
Patti

Pardon the stupid question... Is that a really dark red lens or your mold? By the way, solid red lenses are fine for us if the two color is not possible.

I think that is the core for the mold.
