Tip for cutting foam rubber

I needed to cut some 4" foam cushions and have heard that an electric knife works great. I don't own an electric knife.

So, I stopped at the Dollar Tree and bought two serrated steak knives for a buck. I smacked the plastic handle with a hammer and it turned out that the metal part of the blade inside the handle is exactly the right size and shape to attach to my jig saw. Worked like a charm.

And now I have an extra steak knife.

Didn't Dollar Tree have electric knives? They are longer, better for thick foam. What's the cushion project?

I think everything at The dollar Tree is a dollar or less, I don't think even China makes a 1 dollar electric knife.

Bob, I'm taking out my upper bunk and converting the front to a dinette. I cut the upper bunk foam into three pieces that make up the dinette / front couch. I saved the upper bunk board and cover in case I sell it and someone wants it back to original. All they will have to do is install new foam.

New cushions have 1/4" plywood bottoms and $27 worth of remnant upholstery stapled on. Mr. Thrifty.

I bought my electric knife at a garage sale. I think I paid about a buck for it. For those looking to do the same and don't have one... or a jig saw... follow the garage sales... great places to outfit a molded trailer too

I never would have thought of the steak knife trick, I'm impressed. When our electric knife broke we just bought another at Walmart. Later found one at Goodwill and got it as a spare. We don't have the bunk in our CT, the parts are missing, but we have the full length cushions to have a front couch. Still not sure if we use them in the correct positions but they work. The only other CT we have seen had a big fiberglass piece inside in the front that I assume was to support the bunk. Ours does not have that piece, but has a small home made shelf under the window which is both handy and in the way sometimes when sitting there. Bob

lol,,,not to poke holes in your bubble, but.......they make toothless jig saw blades for this exact purpose.
that being said,,,,they probably cost more then a dollar.

Yea, but I actually already had the knives which I was going to use to cut loose the back window.

I borrowed an electric knife from a friend and he didn't have a problem as long as I cleaned it up when I returned it. NO idea if he told his wife!
