Title requirements in Oregon?
Hi,
I am looking at a 13ft Scamp in WA. The owner passed away and her son is selling the trailer. Trouble is, he doesn't know where the title is. I trust the seller, from what I heard so far.
I'll call DMV tomorrow and ask, but from what I know you don't need a title here in Oregon, right? Could I just forget about the title?
Thanks,
Holger

You need a title in Oregon. As to whether you can get an Oregon Title with a bill of sale or not is a different matter.
The registration fee is $101.25 every two years for your 13' http://www.odot.state.or.us/forms/dmv/464.pdf

Oh, I got that wrong, then. Thanks, Bryon. Jeez, even a registration fee. I'll find out more tomorrow.

There is currently two different Oregons residents that have brought non-titled trailers into Oregon. One when they moved here from a state that didn't require titles and the second who have been long time residents of Oregon. They're both having HORRIBLE times getting their trailers registered and licensed for use in Oregon. Ownership in Oregon is by title NOT a bill of sale. I would NEVER purchase something that needs to be titled and licensed by Oregon DMV if it didn't come with a clear title. YMMV
The registration fee Byron referenced is for the license... it's by the foot, the longer the trailer the higher the fee.

Make sure that the succession is finalized and that the seller does in fact have
the right to sell. Depending on state law, he may yet have to have the trailer titled in his name before he can sell it.

Someone on this site once wrote about registering a camper as"an out of state' type of registration. They did it by mail and it was quite inexpensive. I'l keep looking through my notes for more info.

Donna is right.
Thinking about it a bit, I believe my total registration fee, including the first 2 years of license was around $250 that was in 2005.

Interesting, here in VT a trailer less than 1500 lbs is not titled. I believe other New England states have similar rules. To the best of my knowlege over 1500 lbs a trailer is titled and in either case to get a registration all that is needed is a bill of sale and/or a registration transfer. I have read of the hassles people have in some states and am curious as to why? Is there some wide spread illegal activity that has brought about these hoops people have to jump through? Raz

In Oregon, a Bill of Sale is used for horses... where would you find a stamped VIN?
I'm grateful that a title is necessary. With the economy tanking, there seems to be more theft going on than ever before. ANYONE can fill out a bill of sale... there's lots of help on the WWW to fill one out and even download an "official" looking document. At least in Oregon, I know no one is going to steal my trailer and waltz into DMV and get it registered to THEM. Are there hassles, sure can be. But it's worth it. That doesn't prevent someone from stealing my trailer and taking it to a non-title necessary state, and I'm aware of that. But still, that title gives me a measure of security here (along with eighteen in the clip and one in the chamber )

Thanks to all the answers. The trailer belonged to a person that passed away recently, and her son is selling it. As I said, I believe he is an honest person, and I hope he'll be able to produce the title. The trailer originally comes from Oregon, and was never used in Washington, so chances are we can re-title it here in Oregon through the previous owner.
I've just gone through a 3-months process of re-certifying an aircraft with a missing piece of its Airworthiness Certificate. This trailer title can't possibly be worse then that.
I'll let you know what came out of it.
