Hi. I pulled the pin to lower the tongue jack this morning and it came apart, dislodging a small washer and I can't figure out where it goes so the spring works properly. This is obviously an I.Q. test that I am failing

Does anyone know how to put it back together? Thanks in advance.

Dave

The problem is the retaining bump has worn off. I had my brother weld a new bump after I purchased a replacement.

The washer goes on the end closest to the frame. When you pull on the handle the spring compresses.

If you look closely at the end of spring or bit closer to the handle you find remains of the bump. I suppose a person could drill and tap a small hole and put short screw in. I don't know that I would want to drill all the through which would weaken the shaft and could cause a failure when you're in the trailer.

The pin in ours has a hole through it with a cotter pin to hold the washer.

Agree on the cotter pin. I had one, cotter pin wore out, and I replaced it with a roll pin, sometimes called a spring pin; see below.

good idea on the roll pin, they are harder and more durable than a cotter pin. I have plenty of them too in all sizes, should have thought of that.
